Joel Breems Joins Zero Emissions Northwest as Director of Energy Programs

Joel joins ZEN with an ecological background in sustainability initiatives.

Spokane, WA – June 12, 2024 – Zero Emissions Northwest (ZEN) is excited to announce the appointment of Joel Breems as Director of Energy Programs. Joel will further strengthen ZEN's commitment to driving innovative solutions for a greener future.

Joel Breems joins ZEN with an ecological background in sustainability initiatives. Most recently, Joel served as Operations Coordinator at the International Rescue Committee in Spokane, Washington, where he managed operational logistics and coordinated efforts to enhance organizational efficiency. Prior to that, he was an Environmental Scientist at Avista, where he represented the company in regional environmental efforts to improve water quality in the Spokane River.

Joel also held key roles at the Protected Areas Commission in Guyana, South America, where he served as Head of the Ecological Monitoring & Research Department and Protected Areas Officer. In these roles, he restructured the commission, developed and implemented ecological monitoring programs, and led efforts to improve the management and conservation of Guyana’s National Protected Areas System.

His earlier career includes experience as a Dale Bryson Water Quality Intern at the Alliance for the Great Lakes, an Environmental Specialist at the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and a Research Assistant at the University of Washington. Joel also contributed to habitat restoration projects as a Habitat Restoration Assistant at the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group and served as a Corpsmember with the Washington Conservation Corps.

Joel's commitment to environmental sustainability is further demonstrated by his service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco, where he introduced vegetative erosion control techniques and facilitated the creation of a local development association.

Joel holds a degree in Environmental Studies from the Seattle Pacific University and a Masters from the University of Washington. His diverse background and extensive experience make him a valuable addition to the ZEN team as they continue to lead the way in sustainable energy solutions.
